Pincode (Postal Index Number)
A Postal Index Number or PIN or Pincode is a code in the post office numbering or
post code system used by India Post, the Indian postal administration. The code
is six digits long.
The system was introduced to help make simpler the manual sorting as well as delivery
of mail by elimination of confusion over incorrect addresses, similar place names
and different languages used by the public.
Structure of Pin Code (Postal Index Number)
The structure of the Pin Code (Postal Index Number) is as follow
- The first digit indicates: zones / region.
- The second digit indicates: the sub-region
- The third digit indicates: the sorting district within the region.
- The last 3 digits indicate: the specific post office
